Welcome to the Me with Dementia Talking About… weekly series.

Each Wednesday, I share an excerpt from my book—Me With Dementia Talking About—where I share reflections from the perspective of someone living with dementia. These gentle reflections are designed to help caregivers, family members, friends, and healthcare professionals better understand what dementia may feel like from the inside.

Whether you’re joining us for the first time or have been following along from the beginning, I’m glad you’re here.

A Cup of Comfort Before the Science

Before we go tiptoeing into the brain and start tossing around words like atrophy and neurons, let’s take a moment to breathe.

You’ve just walked through a lot — confusion, diagnosis, change, and truth. You’ve felt the ache of what’s slipping away and the warmth of what still holds. That’s not small. That’s courage.

So, before we start mapping out what happens inside the brain, I want you to remember something important: you don’t need a medical degree to understand your loved one.

You just need compassion, curiosity, and maybe a second cup of tea.

When we peek inside the brain in the next chapters, you’ll see words like frontal lobe, hippocampus, and executive function. Don’t let those terms scare you — I’ll be right here, turning the science into plain language and adding a little humor where the medical jargon gets too stiff.

We’re going to look at the why behind all the what in the world is happening? moments.

Because once you understand why your loved one can’t plan dinner anymore, or why they swear you’ve already had the same conversation five times — the frustration eases. The compassion grows. The heart softens.

So take a sip, stretch your shoulders, and exhale.

You’re doing beautifully.

Now, let’s step gently into the next part — where we peek inside the incredible, complicated, mysterious world of the brain, and learn what dementia really does there.

I promise, it’s fascinating… and it might just change the way you see everything that comes next.

“We’ll move from tears to tissues to tissues of the brain — but I promise to make it gentle.”
