Hello my dear ones,
Can we just say the quiet part out loud? Dementia caregivers are some of the most overworked, under-slept, and under-supported people on the planet. And yet…where’s the parade? Where’s the cheering squad? Where’s the free coffee delivered daily to our doorsteps? (I’d even settle for a gift card.)
Instead, most days it feels like we’re invisible. We’re holding down the fort, managing medications, refereeing hallucinations, and trying to remember when we last ate something other than peanut butter toast. Meanwhile, the healthcare system is standing around like, “Huh, good luck with that.”
Why So Little Help Exists
Here’s the scoop:
-
It’s hidden work. We do this behind closed doors, so people don’t see how hard it is.
-
It’s a system problem. Dementia care gets scattered between doctors, specialists, and agencies who don’t talk to each other.
-
It’s misunderstood. Too many folks still think dementia is “just memory loss,” not the full-on roller coaster ride that it really is.
-
It’s underfunded. Research money flows more freely to other diseases, while dementia caregivers are left cobbling together resources like DIY warriors.
What Needs to Change
But here’s the good news: change can happen, and we can be part of it.
-
Raise awareness. Share your story. The more people understand what caregiving looks like, the harder it is to ignore.
-
Push for policy. Caregivers need real support—respite programs, better Medicare coverage, and caregiver training.
-
Teach the teachers. Doctors and nurses need practical dementia training, not just textbook facts.
-
Build community. Local support groups, nonprofits, churches, and neighbors can be lifelines while the “big system” catches up.
Why Your Story Matters
Friends, I know it often feels like we’re carrying this alone. But every time one of us speaks up, it chips away at the silence. It tells the world: caregivers are here, our loved ones matter, and this work deserves respect.
So, let’s be the squeaky wheels. Not just squeaky—let’s be squeaky with glitter. Maybe then someone will notice.
Until then, keep the kettle warm, sneak the chocolate when you need it, and remember: you’re not invisible here. You’re seen. You’re valued. And you’re part of a community that deserves a whole lot more than “good luck with that.”
With love (and a wink),
